The first weeks after separation often set the pattern for what follows. This checklist helps you focus on what matters most.
Put the children first
Agree on a temporary parenting schedule if you can, keep routines stable, and keep adult conflict away from the children. See parenting arrangements.
Gather financial information
- Three years of tax returns and notices of assessment
- Recent pay stubs and bank, investment and pension statements
- Mortgage, loan and credit card statements
- Documents for any property you owned before the relationship, or received as a gift or inheritance
Deal with the bills
Decide, in writing if possible, who pays the mortgage or rent and other shared bills in the short term.
Think before moving out or moving away
Leaving the family home, or moving with the children, can affect parenting and property issues. Get advice first.
Consider your options
Many families resolve everything by agreement or through mediation and arbitration. Court is available when it is needed. Learn more about divorce and separation.
