Working with us

How much does a consultation cost?

A 15-minute consultation is $100, a 30-minute consultation is $200 and a one-hour consultation is $350 (CAD). You can book and pay online.

Do you meet in person or online?

Consultations booked online take place over Microsoft Teams. To meet at our office at Suite 210, 3132 26 Street NE, Calgary, call 587-393-3958.

Does contacting you make me a client?

No. A lawyer–client relationship begins only when we confirm in writing that we will act for you. Please do not send confidential details until we have spoken.

Do you accept legal aid certificates?

Usman Mahmood is on the Legal Aid Alberta roster, mainly for immigration matters. Tell us if you have a certificate or think you may qualify.

Can you guarantee a result?

No lawyer can guarantee an outcome. We give you an honest assessment and prepare your case thoroughly.

Immigration

My refugee claim was refused. What can I do?

You may be able to appeal to the Refugee Appeal Division, generally within 15 days of receiving the written reasons, or apply for judicial review in the Federal Court. See refugee appeals.

How long do I have to challenge a decision in the Federal Court?

Generally 15 days for a decision made in Canada and 60 days for a decision made outside Canada. See Federal Court judicial review.

I have a removal date. Is it too late?

Not necessarily. A deferral request, a PRRA or a stay motion may be available. See detention, removal and stays.

Can you help if I live outside Calgary?

Yes. Federal Court matters and most immigration applications can be handled for clients across Canada.

Generally two years from when you knew or should have known about the injury. Some notice periods are shorter.

What changes with Care-First in 2027?

For collisions on or after January 1, 2027, the ability to sue will be limited. See Care-First auto insurance.

Should I accept the insurer’s first offer?

Criminal defence

Should I talk to the police?

You have the right to remain silent and the right to speak with a lawyer. Speak with a lawyer first.

Can the complainant drop the charges?

No. The Crown decides whether to proceed.

I am not a citizen. How does a charge affect my status?

Some convictions can make permanent residents and foreign nationals inadmissible. Tell us about your status at the first meeting.

Family law

No. Many families resolve everything by agreement, sometimes with mediation. A divorce judgment is granted by the court.

How is child support calculated?

Generally using the Federal Child Support Guidelines, based on the paying parent’s income and the number of children. See child and spousal support.

Can we resolve our dispute without a judge?

Yes. Mediation and arbitration are available. See family mediation and arbitration.
