What to do in the first 30 days after a car accident in Alberta

The weeks after a collision are busy and stressful. These steps help protect both your recovery and your claim.

See a doctor and keep going

Get assessed promptly, even if you feel the injury is minor, and follow the treatment plan. Gaps in treatment are often used to argue that an injury was not serious.

Report the collision

Report to police where required and notify your own insurer promptly. Accident benefits have their own notice requirements, some of them short.

Keep records

  • Photos of the vehicles, the scene and your injuries
  • Names and contact details of witnesses
  • Receipts for medication, travel and equipment
  • A record of missed work and the tasks you could not do

Be careful with the other insurer

You do not have to give a recorded statement to the other driver’s insurer, and you should not sign a release before you know what your claim is worth.

Know the 2027 change

Alberta’s Care-First system takes effect on January 1, 2027 and limits the right to sue. Ask a lawyer which rules apply to your collision. Learn more about car accident claims.
